Light Rifle

NRA Light Rifle competition is aimed at getting the “.22 rifle at home” out of the gun safe and onto the range—along with a youngster, or an adult, to shoot it. Light Rifle is above all, an adaptable discipline. All that is needed is a .22 that weighs less than 8½ pounds and a supply of the same ammunition used to shoot tin cans or hunt squirrels.

Matches are fired outdoors at 50 yards. Light rifle shooting is ideal as a way to encourage youngsters to compete as well as a good way to reintroduce older shooters to the sport. And, best of all, Light Rifle competition is fun.

Rules define a “light rifle” as being any rifle chambered for .22 caliber rimfire rifle cartridges, having a trigger pull on not less than 2 pounds, and weighing less than 8½ pounds complete with sights, standard safety features, and accessories. Telescopic sights are permitted – within the 8½- pound weight limit. Rifles used are not regulated  according to action type. Bolt-action, slide-action, lever-action, and self-loading rifles, all are equally useful. Any .22 Rimfire ammunition -- .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle may be used.
